I just returned from several days in Dallas where three generations of fabulous Texan women gave me a taste of how women with “ganas” (or drive) are on the move and beginning to flex their collective muscles as leaders and vital engines of economic growth. Here’s a taste of female Southwest “stirrings” I witnessed.

Thear Sy, Senior Director
Accenture

WIN/NAAAP
Until Cambodian-born Thear Sy, who arrived in this country at age nine and is now a senior director with Accenture, invited me to speak at NAAAP’s ”Leadership Inspired by Women” conference of the Dallas/Fort Worth chapter, I had never heard of the National Association of Asian-American Professionals or its WIN (Women inNAAAP) network. Three major corporations, jcpenney,AccentureandRaytheon, sponsored the conference. What did I learn after spending a gorgeous Saturday in all-day training sessions with 140 Asian American women hungry to sharpen their leadership skills?

Recently, the Children’s Heartwork Project visited the town of Minamisanriku, a town in the Miyagi prefrecture of Japan where the March earthquake tsunami destroyed large sections of the town. For former NAAAP Atlanta member Jessop Petroski, it was his third trip to the disaster-affected area.

“Needless to say, it is just beyond comprehension to see what has taken place up there,” he said. “[In some of our photos], you will see a four-story tall building with a car still on the roof. A 50-60 foot wall of water is an incredible force!”

A team of 32 individuals paid a recent visit to the area to bring art supplies to the children affected by the disaster. Donations of crayons, Play Doh, and kites were some of the items provided.

One of the children they encountered, Kurumi or “Ku-chan”, was 3 years old and spent entire mornings with the group where she was able to draw excitement from the other children and engage them by connecting with the volunteers.

As evidenced by this visit, northern Japan still has a long way to go before things are back to normal. If you would like to contribute further to the disaster relief in Japan, submit a donation on our site, as well as visiting the site of Japan-America Society of Georgia (JASG).

This month, our Nation celebrates the contributions and accomplishments of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI). Our AAPI communities have roots that span the globe, but their stories of striving and success are uniquely American. As we celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we recognize the entrepreneurship and fortitude of individuals who have helped build our country and shape the American dream for centuries.

Generations of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have helped develop and defend the United States, often in the face of tremendous racial and cultural prejudice. Despite these difficulties, AAPI men and women struggled, sacrificed, and persevered to build a better life for their children and all Americans.

Today, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have a profound impact on our society as leaders in all facets of American life, thriving as athletes and public servants, entrepreneurs and artists. Whether as small business owners or as proud members of the United States Armed Forces, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are helping to write the next chapter of the American story.

In 2010, NAAAP began a high-value collaboration with Project Management Institute (PMI). The two organizations have a common, shared vision: to develop people as leaders to meet the needs of our communities for generations to come. A workshop track during 2010 Convention was organized by PMI members and clearly demonstrated the high quality of PMI courses and the strategic value of our collaboration. We are now moving full steam ahead with further program alignment.
